Marking the Ciechanów Jewish Cemetery

Updated: 6 days ago

The FODŻ-owned Jewish cemetery of Ciechanów has now been marked out. In recent months sandstone markers with the Star of David and the inscription "Jewish Cemetery" in Hebrew, Polish, and English were placed around the cemetery perimeter. An information signboard was installed at the entrance. The project was led by Krzysztof Bielawski of FODŻ. FJHP provided major financial support for the project under the leadership of Albee Kava. FJHP thanks Stefany and Simon Bergson Foundation, Bob and Barbara Roswell in memory of Max Ruda, Albert and Beth Kava in memory of the Golodzier Family, Jaffa Bergson Feldman, Lillian Meyers, Jeri Ann Karlsberg, Max Singer, H. William Wolfson, WIlliam Wolfson and the National Heritage Board of Poland for providing us and FODŻ with the funding for this project.

Placing boundary markers is a major step towards helping raise public awareness of the boundaries of this sacred space. The cemetery is not only the site of several thousand traditional burials, but also the site of mass graves from World War II. The cemetery was severely devastated by the war and its consequences.

The cemetery has been owned by FODŻ since 2016, which, with the help of FJHP and descendants of Ciechanów's Jews has helped restore a 1962 monument on the site. Further support is needed to keep the cemetery clean and dignified.
